I’ve been coming to the Whitlock since I was a teenager. The staff are awesome, the facility is clean, the workout equipment is varied and up-to-date, and it’s five minutes from home now. There’s an awesome climbing wall, too! I’ve yet to see it ridiculously crowded, even on a Saturday morning. A lot of older people use this facility, usually in groups, so just be aware of that. Whitlock has a ton of classes; they offer everything from yoga to aquacize. Parking is a little funky but not that difficult to figure out. I personally run and use the elliptical, and I never have to wait to do so. Oh, and the little water-bottle filler above the drinking fountain is pretty sweet too; it shows how many plastic bottles were saved by its use. Seriously, if you live in the Lakewood/Wheat Ridge area, I can think of no better gym. I used to work at the Wheat Ridge rec center as a lifeguard when I was in high school and still remember how hectic it was all the time. If you want to just work out without the hassles…gotta say, Whitlock is the place to go.
I just love being a member of the Lakewood Rec centers. A few years ago when I moved to the west side of town and still had my 24hr Fitness membership, I started looking around for a new gym. Can we take a second to acknowledge how gross pretty much every 24hr Fitness is?? I don’t need to say anymore than the fact that once I saw poop on the wall of their bathroom. Like a lot of it. But enough about that horrible place!
So thank goodness I found the Lakewood Rec centers. They are great and a fantastic deal. They are like a breath of fresh air compared to any of the gym chains out there. They are always clean and never once has it felt crowed. Most of them have rock walls and pools. The machines aren’t cramped together and the Whitlock in particular feels very spacious. I see a lot of the same guests, it kind of feels like a family. My only criticism is their group classes seem a little too generic and easy. I’m not the fittest person but they still don’t seem challenging enough if you are used to something more rigorous like crossfit or barre. You don’t have to be a Lakewood resident to get a good deal and the prices are particularly nice if you prepay a household membership.
